Photoshop CS6 Sneak Peek
2012 will see the release of a new version of Photoshop taking it to CS6 and already we’re starting to see snippets of what’s in store being posted online.

Photoshop World – Early Bird

There’s nothing quite like being well organised so here’s a date for the diary: Photokina in Cologone, Germany between 18th and 23rd September 2012…the biggest photography and imaging event in the world!

Not just an event to get your hands on the latest and greatest kit, this is one heck of a networking event so if you’re looking at making a trip over, I’ll see you there

Photoshop World is the largest Photoshop and Photography Training convention of it’s kind in the world and this coming March is being held in Washington DC. Having had the call from Scott Kelby I’m now one of the Official Instructors and am so excited to be teaching a class on Sunday 25th March at 3.45pm which I’m calling ‘Photoshop Fast & Furious‘.

I can’t wait to share what I have planned; a class packed with exciting and fun compositing and retouching techniques that as the class description says: Will leave you spending less time being corrective and more time being creative!

If you’re going to be there be sure to say hi; you’ll recognise me from the Union Jack Boxer Shorts, Bowler Hat and Cup of Tea in hand…oh and with my little finger extended of course.

I seriously cannot even begin to explain how excited I am to have been asked; as if going to Photoshop World wasn’t good enough I’m now on the Instructor list alongside my heroes in this Industry…but I guess words like overwhelmed, ecstatic and honoured are as good as start as any

Having only yesterday had the phone call with Scott Kelby I’ve yet to decide on what exactly I’ll be teaching but as soon as I know more details I’ll be sure to keep you posted, but seeing as Scott announced it on The Grid I just had to share the news with you; I guess you can tell I’m excited right?

Anyway I just had to tell you, but I must dash…I’ve booked some elocution lessons to help with my pronunciation of ‘Opacity’ with a home tutor between now and March 2012 and they’re due round any minute, so I’ll catch up with you later,

As you’d expect, the workshop was a huge success and hanging out with Calvin & his assistant Gabor was a total blast; a laugh a minute…

However, regular readers of this blog will remember that there was an issue with the Holiday Inn Hotel where Calvin and Gabor were staying during their time in the UK, in that Calvin was charged for a 3rd room…a room he didn’t book! So, both Calvin and myself wrote blog posts about the issue and in addition to that recorded a video that explains everything that went on so if you’ve never seen it you can check it out below:

Anyway, when we wrote these blog posts we promised to update you with the final outcome (if any) so I’m really pleased to tell you now that Calvin did get his money back! Long story short, thanks to you guys the blog posts and video were shared, re-Tweeted and posted on Facebook and Google+ so much that the story landed on the desk of the Head Honcho, The Big Boss, The Big Cheese of the Holiday Inn in the US and was…dealt with!

So what can Holiday Inn, in fact all of us take from this?
Social Media is incredibly powerful. We live in a World of instant feedback and whereas before it used to be that a person would tell, on average, 9 other people if they received poor service, today that person does literally tell The World, and what’s more tells them instantly! Ofcourse it also works the other way too…give someone great service and they’ll also tell the World.

Lenses: Try Before You Buy
As a photographer, if you’re going to spend your hard earned cash on anything make it lenses; now I don’t mean go out and buy lots of them, but rather buy the best ‘glass’ that you can. However a Pro Nikon or Canon Lens can be quite an investment but thankfully nowadays there are companies emerging that actually hire lenses out.

One such company is Maidenhead, UK based, Lenses for Hire [Link] whom I’ve used on several occasions for their great range of lenses, pricing and customer service…

Having taken your recommendation and used Lenses for Hire for a long weekend in Madrid, I hired their Canon 18-200mm f/3.5 zoom (the EF “L” 28-300mm weighed in at 1.5kg; far to much) – this gave me the opportunity to enjoy the break without carrying an equal body weight of kit around with me (okay, a slight exaggeration of comparisons).  Being a tourist and experiencing the grab shots, open-top bus tours and the like, it was a gem and I still can’t get over how few I’ve deleted for technical ineptitude. That’s not to say there’s any artistic content, you’ll understand!  The lens was a dream – just the one and I felt so comfortable that I’d covered most requirements – it was a holiday, after all.

But to top it, I couldn’t get over the administrative efficiency of LFH; acknowledging my order, confirming it, advising of it’s dispatch, reminder of return date, and after I’d dropped it off at the Courier in Maidenhead, they’ve even confirmed their receipt. Top notch!

Glyn, again, very many thanks for your recommendation – I shall certainly be using LFH again, and probably rather more than my original plan for just the “Big” occasion.

Testing the SaberStrip
Later this week I’ll be posting a review about the SaberStrip [Link] light modifier that I was sent through from the States.

I managed to give it a bit of a run yesterday during a Photo Shoot so I’ll be sure to post all about it. In the mean time though to give you an idea as to what it looks like, you can see it in the set up shot below just behind our model…

It can be time consuming, if not challenging, at times to keep all the social media sites we belong to updated on a regular basis but iStatus+ [Link] looks like it could be the answer…

Having just read the review I’ve just this minute installed the App and have yet to give it a try, so why not head on over to Terry’s blog [Link] and give it a try yourself; it’d be great to hear your thoughts and whether you think it’s a winner or not.
