So here’s Part 1 of my Beauty Retouching workflow and we’re going to start off by removing obvious blemishes and working on the subjects’ eyes a little.
Before we start though there are just a few things I want to point out:
- This is a ‘Beauty Retouch’ i.e. the kind of editing that I would do for images that are going to appear in a magazine or are generally for a specific ‘beauty’ purpose where we live in the land of the ‘perfect person’…if that makes sense. However, this doesn’t mean to say that you can’t use these techniques in your everyday retouching because you can; all you need to do is to tone them down a little so that the effect isn’t quite so obvious.
- I can’t take any credit for the techniques you see me use because they are all a mix of what I have learned along the way from awesome people such as Scott Kelby, Eddie Tapp and Calvin Hollywood.
- If you’d like to follow along, you can download the same high resolution image that I’ll be using by clicking on this link.
- At the end of each day save your work as a flattened Photoshop or TIFF file so we can pick up from where we left off.
- Nil, Nought, Nothing…Just don’t like finishing lists on an even number

Part 1: Removing Blemishes & Enhancing Eyes
So there you have it, blemishes have now been removed and the eyes which are a vital part of a portrait have been enhanced too.
Any questions or comments about what you’ve seen covered so far please feel free to make use of the ‘comments’ section below where I’ll be sure to post a reply.
Tune in tomorrow for Part 2: Skin Retouching where we’ll cover how to add tone/contrast to the skin and then later adding some realistic smoothing.
Enjoy![]()

Glyn - David, glad to gear you liked the video. It’s always encouraging to hear that they’re well received and useful.
Cheers,
Glyn
Glyn - @Tim…Thanks for that Tim; it’s great to hear that kind of feedback.
Re flattening the layers I was wondering if that was part of my Virgo trait and needing everything to be orderly…lol
Cheers, Glyn
ps> Snatch…now that gives me an idea
David Kelly - Glyn,
At Tim says you do a good tutorial. Talking through the process and the reasons why is just as important showing it, and you do make it sound so easy & straightforward
I’ll certainly be giving it ago.
Thanks for sharing.
(Those red eyes on the model during the video look freaky btw)
Best wishes,
David
tim wallace - Glyn always a pleasure mate to see your tips, well put together and explained so that those not too familiar with CS can follow, an excellent piece of work yet again.
Glad to see I’m not the only one obsessed with flattening and duplicating layers as you move through the edit. Good practice tho!
PS: I think you should do a special xmas tutorial later this year in the style of the ‘Snatch’ film…lol
Take care and keep up the good work mate
