Photoshop Tutorial: Colouring the Background

As promised here’s a short Photoshop tutorial I’ve put together that shows how you can spice up the background in your portrait shots by first of all adding a ‘spotlight’ effect behind your subject. Also for those of you who like to use coloured gels on your backgrounds in the tutorial I show how you can fake this look very simply and very quickly.

As I use Photoshop CS5 the first part of the tutorial shows how the effect can be created using tools only found in CS5 such as the Refine Mask command, however I also show how you can create a similar effect just as quickly using CS4 or earlier versions by making use of Blend Modes.

Glyn - @Neil…Excellent, glad you like it mate. Check out Calvin’s added extra tip in the comments section re changing the HS layer blend mode to colour…works a treat! :)

Calvin - Hi
I used a similar way for my projekt photographer.

But i change the blendmode of the color layer into “color” for a better result.
But many ways are possible
