Beauty Retouching in Photoshop

I get quite a steady flow of questions asking how I edit some of my photographs so I’ve decided that next week (starting Monday 31st May) I’m going to be adding a series of posts to show some of the editing techniques I use in Photoshop to do a ‘Beauty Retouch’.

I’ll be covering simple techniques like removing blemishes to more advanced (but simple) techniques for adding contrast to the skin using the Luminosity of the image instead of curves etc… oh and just in case you’d like to follow along, I’ll include a link so that you can download the same image that will be used which incidentally was taken at a photo shoot I did at Oxygen Beauty Salon in Beaconsfield last year.

In the mean time here’s the video I posted before which shows you the lighting set up and a ‘speeded up’ version of the editing techniques we’ll be going through.

Mike - Nice one Glyn. Retouching is always a personal thing when PP images and I never feel mine are quite right especially with the commercial work.

So I will be eagerly waiting to see what comes of the Dewis camp on this :-)

David Kelly - Morning Glyn, looking forward to this new series already.

Like Mike says retouching can be a bit personal depending on how far you want to push things for the look your after. I’m not dealing in the commercial world as with both of you, but I’m certainly interested in learning what can be done around & with the eyes.

Undoubtedly most retouching stuff I’ve seen on the web is for women, so I would be interested to get insight how different your approach is for dealing with male models. Even more reserved than the former I would imagine, but just curious to understand your approach to that re: commercial work.

Glyn - @David…Great to hear from you as always David; how’s things?

I hope the posts next week are of some use to you. Interesting what you say about PP on male subjects as yes it is quite different (in my case anyway). If you like I could look at doing a post on that too; in fact I’m going to post some shots either later today or over the weekend I took of a ‘biker’ neighbour of mine and was thinking of covering the editing and lighting used in those.

kelley - Glyn, I loved watching the video. It’s so cool to see the editing going on. It always amazes me that there are so many different ways to do the same thing in photoshop. I can’t wait to see the full version and learn some new “tricks”.
