Today in Part 4 of my Beauty Retouch series, I’m going to show you how I enhance/add eye lashes and then we’ll add some highlights to the models’ hair.

To add that extra degree of realism to the eyelashes, we can make use of the Shape Dynamics in the Brush Settings and setting them to FADE which has the effect of naturally fading out the brush stroke you apply.
The illustration below shows a series of brush strokes with Shape Dynamics turned ‘OFF‘ and we can see the brush is a consistent width along it’s full length…
However, if we turn ‘ON‘ Shape Dynamics and with FADE selected, we can see the same brush strokes but this time look what happens…

Glyn - @David…That’s what I love about Photoshop though; ie the fact that there are endless ways to do things and ways that people approach their editing. No right or wrong ways…just different.

David Kelly - @Glyn - I’ve tended to do some selective sharpening to the hair, eyes & lips in my beauty retouching (obviously after smoothing skin, you don’t want to then sharpen it). Can’t recall where I picked up that habit from but it’s interesting seeing your different approach.

Glyn - @David…Hi David, thanks for the comment and I’m real pleased to read that you’re finding some of the techniques I’m using in this retouch series useful.
Part 5 will be covering just a couple of techniques including enhancing makeup. I don’t generally apply any sharpening to a Beauty Retouch other than to the eyes but if this is something you’d like to see in the future then just let me know and I’ll see about putting a tutorial together at some point.

David Kelly - Hi Glyn.
Useful to see this bit of retouching at normal speed. I couldn’t quite follow what you were doing in the 2x video previously published
I must give this a go. Previously with my limited retouching skills I’ve only just used a small brush around eyelashes / eyes to selectively sharpen things to help give better definition. Never thought of using the multiply blend mode & mask to enhance them too. Ditto regarding the hair.
All minor adjustments but as you say they help to give the picture that added depth / dimension yet still remain this side of natural.
I guess tomorrow one of finishing touches will be (selective)sharpening? I’m keen to see which sharpening tool you prefer to use for this and how you got about.
