Beauty Retouch Part 5: Makeup and Neck Lengthening

Ok so we’re now at the final stage of my Beauty Retouching Workflow and today we’ll be covering how to enhance make up and then finish off by lengthening the models neck.

Again, just a couple of things to mention before we start:

When it comes to enhancing / adding make up on a model’s face there really is nothing better than the real thing but there are techniques we can use in Photoshop to enhance what make up is already present or maybe even add some where there was originally none.
Certainly in Magazine / Media World a long slender neck is considered feminine hence why I’m covering this technique. However take care when doing this so as not to over-extend the neck and make it seem as though your model has been put through some Medeival Torture device.

At the end of the video I go through the complete Beauty Retouch in ‘double quick time’ as a reminder for what we’ve covered this past week…

So there you have it, my complete Beauty Retouch from start to finish. Sure there may at times be call for more enhancements but generally the stage we have reached now is a respectable ‘finish point’ for most clients.

David Kelly - Glyn,

Big thanks for this series - really appreciated and I’ve found very useful.

I saw your post re: neck lengthening on Tips Squirrel the other day. Hadn’t come across that enhancement before but just looking at the before / after switch in part 5 here, this enhancement gives the illusion of the model’s face seeming slightly thinner. Must give that one a try as it avoids lots of major PP work!

From a learning perspective, I think the format has worked really well too. Splitting the process into 5 bite size chunks makes it more easily digested without seeming overwhelming as an ‘all-in-one-go’ video would be. It makes it much, much easier to follow and more importantly retained in memory.

Steve Porter - Hi Glyn ,

This set of videos is extremely useful, as i’ve said in a previous comment these tips are a real time saver. They are really easy to follow and you can retouch your own image at the same time as watching as they run at a nice pace.
I have posted an image called “Becky” on my flickr page using the tecniques i have learnt from your videos.
Have you thought about doing a DVD of your most used photoshop techniques?
Have you got anymore technique videos in the pipeline?

Glyn - @Steve…Thanks for the feedback. Putting together a series of videos does of course take time but if they’re well received, easy to follow and above all ‘useful’ then great. Obviously with the Workshops a part of the day will be editing so it’s really useful for me to get feedback on some of the techniques that would possibly be covered too.

I’ll definitely take a look at the photos you’ve edited so thanks for letting me know about them. Maybe it would be good to post a few before/after examples from people like yourself here on the blog?…Just a thought.

DaveT - Glyn,

Excellent series. I endorse what was said earlier by David Kelly about the value of it being broken down into chunks. It allows the material to be absorbed and prevents it from being an information overload.

I also liked the fact that you showed how you captured the image in the first place and included a lighting diagram; that made it so much more of a complete process.

In this last episode, I liked how you went back to show the before and the final images in comparison to each other - a useful visual reference point.

Glyn, in an earlier post from your blog, you showed a speeded up retouching technique where you worked on an image of two police officers. Any chance of seeing that process broken down as in this series?

This kind of feedback is exactly what I’m after as it gives me a clear idea of how best to put tutorials like this together for the blog but also for the Workshop, so thanks alot for this.

The video you mention about editing an image with 2 police officers in, can you let me know which one you mean from my youtube page and yeah it’s certainly something I’ll look at putting together.

Harry - Excellent series! Thank you! A few quick tips: Keyboard short cut to duplicate a layer is CTRL+J or Command+J on a Mac. To creata black mask it’s ALT + Layer Mask Icon or Option + Layer Mask Icon on a Mac. You can also click on a mask and click CTRL+I to invert it.
